SMER SMER
스멀스멀
16 Mar – 5 May 2019
Aigantighe Art Gallery, Timaru
SMER SMER (스멀스멀) encapsulates a fascinating Korean onomatopoeic expression, evoking the imagery of 'slow growth' or the subtle sound of 'bugs in motion.'
Within this exhibition, an array of astonishing sculptures unfurled before the viewer's eyes. These sculptures drew inspiration from the realms of bacteria, fungus, plankton, jellyfish, and bugs, resulting in expansive and enchanting creations. Sewn from fabric, these sculptures embodied the softness often linked with maternal, homely, and domestic qualities.
Intriguingly, the soft sculptures subverted expectations by challenging the rigid confines of the gallery's architectural space. This juxtaposition highlighted the interplay between the supple materials and the unyielding gallery setting, inviting viewers’ contemplation and reflection.
